Anthony’s dad overcame addiction and completed parenting classes to regain custody of 10-year old Anthony and his siblings, but the reunion was short lived. In 2023, Anthony’s dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. He passed away two years later. Anthony decided not to go back into the system.
“Life kind of hit me hard,” Anthony recalls. “I was still a teenager and had to figure a lot out quickly.”
Anthony was couch surfing when he was introduced to Just in Time. Once he got a place of his own, JIT helped furnish his apartment and remained a reliable pillar of support as he entered an apprenticeship program and found a job in construction.
When Anthony’s physical well-being and financial stability were threatened by a painful dental emergency, JIT was on deck to help out.
Anthony was able to rely on Just in Time when faced with a painful dental emergency. “I had my wisdom teeth growing in, causing a lot of discomfort,” he explains. “I don’t have dental insurance, and the bill was overwhelming.”
Just in Time’s Basic Needs service stepped in, connecting Anthony with an oral surgeon and covering most of the expenses. “It was a huge help,” he says. “Without it, I probably would have been in pain for a lot longer until I saved up the whole amount.”
The experience revealed gaps in Anthony’s knowledge about self-care and insurance – things often taught by parents. “Having Just in Time to reach out to when I’m having questions… it helped me a lot,” he shares.
Reflecting on his journey, Anthony notes, “Going through what I went through built character and resilience in me. It makes me appreciate everything that much more – having a roof over my head, having a car, knowing I have food in my fridge.”
For Anthony, Just in Time’s support went beyond dental care—it provided the guidance and care he needed to move forward.
