Dulce’s Home Sweet Home

by | Dec 3, 2022 | YOUTH STORIES

Dulce didn’t hear about Just in Time until she was 26 years old.  She was mother to three beautiful children yet still in the early stages of creating the life she had always dreamed of for herself. With the aid of College Bound, Dulce was pursuing a degree in Child Development, working full-time, and building a life for herself and her children.

One year after moving into their new apartment, Dulce shared that her home was still missing some essential household furnishings.  “It was a work in progress,” said Dulce. The most urgent need was for kitchen items to make home-cooked meals for herself and her young family, so Dulce was thrilled when she was approved for a My First Home “shopping day.”

Dulce headed straight for the kitchen area in JIT’s Distribution Center. “I got knives, a cutting board, silverware, kitchen mats, a drying rack, baking pans…so many things!” Dulce’s Financial Fitness coach, Keith, was also onsite helping her choose items for her home. “I would pick up an item and Keith would say, ‘Eh… you might reconsider. That’s glass and you have three girls.”

Everyone present was excited on the day that JIT’s moving van pulled up outside Dulce’s apartment. The army of volunteers carried all the furnishings into her second-story apartment, helped her assemble and organize all her new possessions, and even took the trash out when they were done.

“I got so much stuff for my kitchen, which was a desperate need,” said Dulce,” And I also got a new bed, which I am so happy about. But my favorite part is my little office. They gave me a new desk and other supplies for building a little study area. That’s what I love the most.”

Dulce could definitely use the office space; she was just promoted to Instruction Assistant at the charter school where she works!
