From Script to Screen: Youth Voices Take Center Stage

Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) recently partnered with Kids in the Spotlight (KITS) to launch a powerful new storytelling initiative for transition age foster youth in San Diego.

The collaboration introduces KITS’ acclaimed “Script to Screen” model, giving young people the opportunity to explore storytelling, filmmaking, and creative self-expression in a supportive environment. Through hands-on workshops, participants develop original screenplays inspired by their own experiences and work alongside professional production crews to bring those stories to life. The result is more than a film. It is a platform for confidence, connection, and being truly heard.

“We are grateful to partner with Kids in the Spotlight to bring this opportunity to the young adults we serve,” said Don Wells, Chief Empowerment Officer of Just in Time for Foster Youth. “We know they have overcome significant challenges and have often been navigating adulthood on their own. This resource gives them a powerful way to create and share their stories confidently, gaining skills in the process that support their path to independence.”

The kickoff event, “Igniting HOPE: Empowering Next Gen Movie Makers,” brought together foster youth, filmmakers, and community members for an inspiring evening of storytelling and connection. Attendees heard directly from KITS program graduates who shared their journeys and the impact of seeing their stories come to life on screen.
