From Dreams to Dispatcher: Tareq’s story
by Rachel Trujillo, JIT Staff
Growing up, Tareq knew that he wanted to be in a profession where he could help people. He’s always taken an interest in law enforcement, expressing that it seemed like the ideal thing to do, with a career helping troubled youth or those affected by the foster care system as an alternative or part of the profession.
Thanks to connections made through Just in Time, Tareq is getting closer to his dream!
“I feel like my resume is solid now,” he shared. “Through Just in Time, I was paired with a coach who helped me with it, then Sanam helped me with the rest.”
Sanam is Just in Time’s Youth Services Managing Coordinator, leading our NEXTjobs effort that helps participants connect their career dots and provides resources and connections relevant to their career interests. By engaging in NEXTjobs, Tareq also made an invaluable connection to a JIT volunteer named Mark, who is an FBI agent.
“Right now I’m leaning toward working for the FBI,” said Tareq. “Mark is here to help any way he can. He’s introduced me to a lot of different agencies like the fire department, sheriff, and police. He also wants to give me a recommendation on an internship that could lead to me being hired.”
After exploring options and resources, Tareq recently took a test for career options related to police, fire department, EMS and so forth. After completing it, he received an interview offer from the San Diego Fire Rescue Department for their dispatch team. He nailed the interview and starts as a dispatcher next week!
“Through the dispatch job, I’ll be immersed in the fire department and be introduced to working in the government,” Tareq shared about the opportunity, adding that it’s setting him up more for his dream career path.
We look forward to continuing to support Tareq as he reaches for those dreams, continues to grow, and proves that anything is possible with the right connections and community behind you!
