Building Life Skills & Confidence

Participants and Volunteers Learn the “art and science” of conversation together

Networking can be a challenge for first time job seekers as well as established professionals.  That’s why we brought together volunteers and participants in our Pathways to Professional Power service to learn how to best “Connect through Conversation.”

This workshop covers the jitters we all feel – be it in work-related or social settings – and how to effectively focus on being present and curious when meeting new people.

Participants learned the importance of positive body language, curious and powerful questions, as well as appropriate conversation closers.

During the workshop, participants were able to practice their new skills with volunteers, some of whom also shared that they find these situations a challenge.

“The Connecting through Conversation workshop revealed to me that, as much as it feels like it, we’re not alone in experiencing imposter syndrome or general awkwardness when approaching networking and navigating more formal social interactions,” said just in time participant, Domenic, “It seems to me that an antidote to the discomfort that comes with networking may be to just start those conversations and ideate as a community on what works.”

Community, Connection, Conversation. These soft skills offer a firm foundation for relationship building in professional settings and beyond.
