M’Niya entered foster care at 13, spending her teenage years at a group home before aging out at 18. Recognizing college as a clear path to a brighter future, M’Niya had good grades and was able to transfer directly to Cal State San Marcos, where she was quickly confronted with new challenges. Limited resources made it difficult for M’Niya to earn her driver’s license, which would empower her to compete for job opportunities, coordinate work and school schedules, and access critical resources.
M’Niya reached out to Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT), a San Diego-based nonprofit that provides comprehensive services for young people transitioning to adulthood from foster care, including help with housing, higher education, financial literacy, and professional development.
Thanks to Just in Time’s partnership with Coastline Academy, the nation’s largest driving school, M’Niya was awarded free behind-the-wheel lessons and provided with access to a Coastline Academy car to take her DMV driving test, which she passed in March. Coastline Academy has since deepened their partnership with Just in Time and their commitment to serving youth in San Diego.
Check out Just in Time CEO Don Wells and Coastline Academy’s Joseph Ongspiapco, below, talking about the impact of the Changing Lanes service on the young people we serve.
