It takes a community to feed a crowd! Last week, with the help of collaborative partners and volunteers, Just in Time transformed our office HUB into a “Farmers Market” providing pantry items to young people in our community.
More than 50 participants showed up, many of them bright and early, before work or school, to fill up their grocery bags. There was no limit to what they could take, and, in some cases, JIT volunteers even picked transportation challenged youth up from their apartments and delivered them back again with groceries in-hand – JIT Volunteer Ken Garnier drove from his house in North County to Chula Vista to pick up a participant for Farmers Market shopping. It was the youth’s first ever time visiting the JIT office in person.
Youth were able to shop a wide variety of items – canned beans, tuna, chicken, pasta, flour, sugar, diapers, canned vegetables, sparkling water, chips. They were even able to shop for clothes, the majority of which were dontaed by JIT participant Sarah Yahya.
“When I heard that Just in Time was having a Farmers Market, I felt like I had to come. I live close to to the office so it’s easy for me to get here. The money I can save on groceries is great because I can turn around and use that on other things, like rent or gas.” ~ Kory, Just in Time Participant
