Watercolor ponies, moody landscapes, and Basquiat inspired self-portraits – the Palette of Possibilities exhibit at Woodward Contemporary celebrates a months-long journey of self-expression by budding Just in Time artists.
Under the guidance of volunteers from San Diego’s art community, JIT participants learn techniques to bring their interior lives to life on canvas or through photography. The workshops, hosted by JIT’s wellness service, Rise to Resilience, teach youth that creative expression can be a healing act.
For Just in Time artists, seeing their work on display in a real-life gallery can be surreal.
“It felt like a dream come true,” said Just in Time participant, Janae, who has been featured in several JIT art shows, “When I was a kid, I wrote that one day my art would be in a gallery. I found that note recently and realized I’d manifested it without even knowing.”
“It’s a powerful reminder that creativity and confidence live in all of us, just waiting to be seen and celebrated,” said long–time Just in Time volunteer and local artist Michele Joyce, “The pride and joy the youth feel when they create something beautiful, often for the first time, is visible and it fills me up.”
