In March, Just in Time unveiled our newest service beneath the Healthy Practices and Well Being banner – My Life, My Story (MLMS).
My Life, My Story engages youth on a journey of self-exploration, personal development and confidence building while cultivating meaningful relationships with peers and coaches.
This service is broken out into gender-based cohorts, providing male and female-identifying participants a safe space for deeper inquiry and discussion of gender related issues like toxic masculinity, healthy relationships, and sexual health. Participants will be paired with coaches to provide guidance and support throughout the 8-month-long cohort.
During our first workshop, youth and coaches participated in an activity called “Forced Identity.” Using markers to represent different identity characteristics related to age, religion, physical appearance, etc., participants were asked questions and then asked to move toward associated markers.
For example, participants and coaches were asked “Which characteristic do you feel most judged by?” and then asked to walk toward the characteristic they associated with the question. In the men’s cohort, participants were surprised to realize that volunteers and youth alike moved toward the age marker – each felt judged about feeling either too old or too young.
“It was super cool because at the end of the workshop, when we discussed what happened, people were able to say they felt comfortable expressing these things and to realize ‘Hey, I’m not the only one.’” Said Esme, Youth Services Managing Coordinator. The My Life, My Story cohorts will meet bi-monthly for self-exploration workshops and community-building activities.
The men’s cohort also had a blast playing a video game tournament of Smash Bros with their coaches while the female’s cohort participated in rock painting and a photo booth.
