Katelyn Recently Spoke at the MyTOD Givers Gala

Since 2020 MyTOD has provided empowering support, not just in the form of professional development services to JIT participants, but through their annual fundraising efforts. This year, Just in Time was grateful to be included in the recent MyTOD Givers Awards Gala. During the event, JIT participant Katelyn Oliver was given the opportunity to share her story and the powerful impact that the MyTOD/JIT collaboration has had on her life. 

Katelyn’s Journey

My name is Katelyn Oliver, and I am excited to share my journey with you. I’m 23 years old, a proud cat mom to Winston (who I totally think is my child), and a recent college graduate. 

In September, I became a full-time tech support representative at a company called HME, a role that not only provides financial stability but has also been a stepping-stone for personal and professional growth. 

First, let me take you back to where it all began. Like many foster youth, I grew up with a lot of uncertainty about the future.  

While my grandparents and sisters offered emotional support, there were limits to the guidance they could provide. My grandparents had worked the same jobs for decades, and as a first-generation college student, I didn’t have anyone in my immediate circle who could help me navigate the path from education to career. 

When I left foster care, I knew I needed to find a community that could bridge that gap.  At Grossmont Community College, and later at SDSU, I found support through programs like EOPS and Guardian Scholars, which introduced me to Just in Time for Foster Youth.  

These programs provided me with the tools, connections, and the confidence to chart my own course. When I graduated from SDSU with my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice I felt ready to start my job search.  

I attended career readiness events hosted by Just in Time, including a life-changing resume workshop hosted by MyTOD. It was there that I met Jack, an HR representative who not only helped me refine my resume and interview skills but also saw potential in me.  

Although this was not meant to be a job interview, a few days later, I received an email from Brittany at Just in Time letting me know that Jack wanted to connect with me about an opportunity to work at his company, HME.
