Recently Just in Time received a $20,000 grant from The Primerica Foundation to support our My First Home service, which helps former foster youth achieve housing stability by furnishing their first apartments.
This generous grant will provide full home setups including furniture, delivery, and installation for 140 youth transitioning out of foster care, helping to turn empty apartments into true homes and laying the foundation for long-term stability.
“We all know affordable, stable housing is a significant challenge for so many San Diegans and it’s greatly amplified for young adults in transition from foster care.” says Don Wells, Chief Empowerment Officer at Just in Time. “The support we receive for My First Home makes it possible for young people we serve to furnish a living space they can be proud of and use their available income for other priorities that move them forward in life.”
The Primerica Foundation chose to support JIT as part of its commitment to helping underserved low to moderate income individuals and families achieve lasting self-sufficiency. Since its inception in 2011, The Primerica Foundation has granted over $17 million to nonprofit organizations positively impacting more than 5 million lives.
“We are pleased to support Just in Time for Foster Youth’s critical work helping underserved youth become self-sufficient adults,” said Kathryn Kieser, Chair of The Primerica Foundation and Chief Reputation Officer at Primerica. “Primerica is committed to help fill the gaps for those in need in order to build stronger communities through great philanthropic partners like Just in Time for Foster Youth.”
My First Home fills a critical gap in housing resources for foster youth. By providing full apartment furnishings, including beds to sleep in and tables to eat at, youth transition into independent living with a sense of dignity and comfort that greatly increases their likelihood of maintaining housing over time. Just in Time believes, and studies show, that having a furnished living space is fundamental to mental and physical wellbeing and increases the likelihood that young people impacted by foster care remain housed.
