For the young men in JIT’s My Life, My Story (MLMS) service, Guys Night at the Gulls Game was the perfect way to break the ice on one of their first meetups. In the parking lot outside the arena, they shared casual conversation while waiting for the whole group to arrive. When one of the group, Marcos, pulled up in a new car, something he’s spent months planning and saving for, the group broke out in cheers, swarming the vehicle to give their congratulations.
My Life, My Story offers a comfortable, judgment free space for young men in the JIT community to build bonds and work on healthy relationships – both with their peers and with male volunteer coaches.
The time they spend in the cohort is split between bonding activities, like hanging rink-side at the Gulls game, and attending workshops where they can reflect on topics related to identity, toxic masculinity, personal goals, hygiene and healthy communication. The goal is for participants within the service to experience personal growth that will help them build stronger, more fulfilling relationships, be better able to define themselves and their power, and to be better equipped to overcome past trauma.
Not only did Dan gift our MLMS guys Gulls tickets to the game, he even coordinated a Just in Time shoutout on the JumboTron, which was a huge thrill for the youth.
Dan connected to the Just in Time community five years ago. He is a past board member who has served as a volunteer in multiple services, mentored several participants whom he maintains meaningful relationships with and has offered legal services to youth in times of need. We are forever grateful to people like Dan for believing in the youth that we serve!
