Graduate school scholarships specifically for young adults impacted by foster care are exceptionally rare.
For Just in Time participants, like Arianna Deleal, the lack of resource can prove an overwhelming barrier, limiting their ability to access post-graduate programs necessary to step into professions where foster youth are historically underrepresented.
“I did a really good job of applying for scholarships and saving money during my undergrad and I finished with a robust savings account. After my second year in Law School, it was all gone,” recalls Deleal, “I think it’s assumed that students pursuing a law degree come from money – every internship is unpaid, it costs more than $800 just to sign up to take the BAR.”
This scarcity of dedicated financial aid isn’t the only challenge students face. The prohibitive cost of housing, especially in San Diego, creates significant barriers that often prevent foster youth from pursuing higher education beyond their undergraduate studies.
Established in 2020 by Gretchen and Bill Morgan, Housing from the Heart is a vital scholarship fund managed by Just in Time for Foster Youth and dedicated to providing financial assistance for housing to college students. Its core mission is to alleviate the burden of housing costs, allowing students to focus on their studies without distractions and thus thrive academically.
Arianna joined Just in Time participant in 2023. She is a College Bound Master Your Dream Scholarship and Housing from the Heart recipient. She graduated with her Juris Doctor from California Western Law School in May and is scheduled to take the Bar exam in July.
“For me, the most meaningful resource I’ve received, financially speaking, has been the Housing from the Heart Scholarship. There have been times when I literally had 26 cents in my pocket, so for them to believe in me and pay my rent up until I take the Bar exam has been unfathomably helpful, says Arianna, “I’m blessed to be both a Housing from the Heart and Master Your Dream recipient.”
Over the past five years, Housing from the Heart has made a significant impact, distributing nearly $300,000 in scholarships to 19 deserving undergraduate and graduate scholars within the Just in Time Community. Applications are reviewed and approved by the Just in Time Education Team and the Morgans.
These crucial higher-level housing scholarships often complement Just in Time for Foster Youth’s annual $5,000 Master Your Dream scholarships for graduate studies, which have been awarded to 72 scholars since 2014.
