In recognition of National Mentorship month, Just in Time is proud to share powerful stories of connection and mentorship from within our community. Louie joined Just in Time as a College Bound participant in 2017. He and his coach continue to grow and learn from each other.
My name is Luvern Titcomb, but everyone knows me by my nickname, Louie. Here’s a little bit about me:
When my parents passed away at a young age – my brothers and I were forced to live with my aunt who made it clear that we were NOT her children, and, essentially, we became the stepchildren acting as Cinderella to take over numerous odd chores throughout our upbringing.
I knew that there was more to life and could not wait to be set free from this toxicity. I didn’t receive encouragement or emotional support from the adult who was assigned to raise me, but I did inherit a drive to succeed –
to prove to her what a BOSS I could be.
When I first joined Just in Time, it was to get a laptop and printer for school, but I ended up finding a community. I’ve cultivated lifelong connections while gaining many more intangible benefits such as becoming financially literate at a young age, continuously creating and reaching new goals, and confidently entering the workforce after college.
My first meaningful connection to a coach was through JIT’s Financial Fitness service.
I was paired with Chris Cordua, who owned a very successful Direct Marketing company. Not only was he working in the field that I was studying in college, but he had knowledge about investing and money management that I was eager to learn. One of my biggest goals was to purchase a house. I had a plan with a timeline – to graduate college and become a homeowner.
From Chris, not only did I learn to carry myself in a professional manner, but the relationship led to an internship at a digital marketing agency in Solana Beach. This internship was my first professional experience in the marketing field. I got a taste of what it was like to work in my field of study. And I learned that I did not truly want to do this day to day. BUT I was able to learn about the earning potential on the other side of marketing – which is sales.
Today, I have achieved my vision for my future. I have a degree. I Am a sales professional at one of the largest cyber security manufacturers in the world, and I AM a homeowner in my 20’s in one of the most competitive housing markets in the country. And I’m still setting new goals for myself.
This journey has truly shown me the value of relationships and their impact on individual success and emotional well-being. They say it takes a village when raising a baby, and that truly goes far even into your adult life as well. Just In Time helps cultivate that “village.”
Thank you to all the coaches who help make an impact by supporting this community just by being there, physically, and being emotionally present with participants, like me.
The first time we met was for lunch at a restaurant in Mission Hills. I’m not going to lie. It was awkward. We had seen each other at a JIT event, but we didn’t know each other, I was a little bit wary, but I really wanted to gain knowledge about how to become a successful investor, and this was someone who could guide me.
After that, we met about once a month. We would talk about what was going on in our lives, and as I began to learn more about him, I could see how much we had in common. He eventually became a role model -someone I could reference when envisioning my own life. Through our coaching sessions, I learned valuable skills that would help me reach my goals, the same way he had reached his.
From Chris, I learned resume writing, how to interview, the value of networking, and what it looked like to become financially free.
Being paired with Chris was a critical step in my career path as his mentorship helped me find my passion for marketing and sales, and he provided insights from his experiences on the good, bad and ugly. I once read a quote,
“Smart people learn from their mistakes, but Geniuses learn from OTHER’S mistakes.”
