Passion Discovered: Brandy’s Story
by Virgo Villajin
“My name is Brandy, I am capable, I am motivated and I am artistic. I would like to thank all the Just in Time volunteers that helped me get to this point and also the volunteers that are going to help future participants.
Brandy joined Just in Time in 2018 after traveling across the country from New York. She made the decision to come to San Diego after realizing that she needed a community and resources for former foster youth. After a 4 day commute by train and car ride from Los Angeles, she was ready to find our community.
Since joining Just in Time, Brandy has participated in all of our services, purchased a reliable car with help from JIT and won second place in our 2020 Shark Tank competition. Brandy shared, “the biggest impact has been the volunteers. I feel like they actually care and make an effort to talk to me, and that’s something I feel like every former foster youth needs because we’ve had a lot of adults let us down in the past.”
More recently, Brandy is balancing a marketing internship with JIT, another marketing internship with our community partner Red Door Interactive, and attending Mesa College. Brandy discovered her passion for marketing after being encouraged by her Career Horizons Coach, Alicia, to explore her creative side. Brandy shared, “I felt like I was just pursuing STEM because it was the safe or right choice, but the conversations with my coaches helped me see that I have a creative side that I love exploring.”
We’re so proud of the growth and connections Brandy has made while exploring her new passion and we can’t wait to see where it takes her!
