Weekly Wrap-Up 10/15/21

Did You Know?

Just in Time recently received a $10,000 grant from Cox Charities! Over the years, Cox Charities has been a consistent and committed member of the Just in Time community. Their most recent investment will support JIT’s overall mission of helping youth become Confident, Capable, and Connected. By filling gaps in key areas and mobilizing the San Diego community as an extended family for foster youth, we are providing a foundation of support for youth struggling to gain equitable access to emergency resources, transportation, housing, education, financial literacy resources, mental health support, and employment opportunities. Together, we are partnering to break the cycle of foster care, now and for generations to come!

Career Horizons Graduation

by Rachel Trujillo and Nina Desmond, JIT Staff

Recently, the JIT community came together to celebrate participants in our 2021 Career Horizons for Young Women cohort through a virtual graduation!

Memories were shared as participants reflected on their experiences throughout this year’s workshops and events, and the power of relationships shone through as as they recognized each other’s growth, the friendships that were developed, and the unwavering support they received from their volunteer coaches and Career Horizons coordinator, Nina.

Throughout the year, the cohort participated in several workshops and events that focused on personal and professional development. Topics included exploring their individual identities, building healthy relationships, finding their true passions, and tools for setting boundaries in and out of the workplace. Although the workshops were virtual because of the pandemic, special outdoor activities were held for participants and coaches to meet and bond, including a Painting in the Park event and 7 Bridges Hike across San Diego.

As Career Horizons graduate Alyssa shared, “I really enjoyed all the Career Horizons virtual workshops and in-person community events. It was a safe place for me to be able to connect with others and I was also able to learn more about self-love and improvement. The thing that stuck with me the most was the atmosphere that JIT staff, volunteer coaches, and participants created.” Alyssa added that she plans to stay connected and strengthen her bond with her Career Horizons coach, Lucia. She’s even planning a dog walking volunteer day with Lucia and Nina!

During the virtual celebration, 11 committed participants were recognized for their participation in Career Horizons, and each received a certificate of achievement along with a thoughtful gift basket full of self-care items and other goodies.

In addition to the diplomas and gifts that were awarded, three standout participants received special recognition: Most Self-Growth went to Camren Kennings, Most Connected to Alisha Patino, and Most Committed to Aaliyah Harness.

Although it’s the end of the cohort, it’s just the beginning of our participants’ journeys! We look forward to supporting them as they continue to grow and thrive, and we are so proud of what they’ve already accomplished!

B2S Golf Academy
by Virgo Villajin, JIT Staff

Our Bridges to Success men hit it to the greens in their recent golf clinic at Mission Bay Golf Course. Our participants and volunteers attended the event and received hands-on training from several instructors on the fundamentals of different golf swings. Our coaches were especially helpful by providing feedback and words of encouragement for our many first-time golfers.

Cisco, a JIT participant, shared “It was a lot more challenging than I thought it would be but it was so much fun, I love learning a new skill.”

There was a shared appreciation for enjoying the outdoors and bonding over an activity. The day concluded with a light dinner and sharing thoughts on how the evening changed their perspective on golf. All of our participants shared how much they appreciated the instructors for teaching them with enthusiasm and keeping the evening fun.

It was a great evening hosted by Bridges to Success Coordinator DeRahn, and we’re all excited for the next!
