Joss graduated from UCSD in the Spring of 2022 with a B.S. in Developmental Psychology. There they found a passion for foster care as they unpacked their own childhood lived experience and dove into their social justice studies. They attribute their own mental wellness journey to lifelong involvement in spaces of collective healing, and since joining the My Life My Story and Rise to Resilience team, they’re excited to create opportunities for people at JIT to do the same.
They also have a long passion for intersectionality and inclusion, having worked with queer and nonbinary youth in college! Developing a chosen family is always at the forefront, both in work and in their personal life.
When they’re not at work, Joss likes to exercise their creative muscles by painting, cooking, or working to find their next craft. As a new movie buff, they’re always looking for the next flick to add to their watchlist!
kasandra@jitfosteryouth.org
Kasandra has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and has always wanted to focus more on the “social work” aspect of that field. Throughout college, she volunteered with Love Your Melon and Pinky Swear Pack, organizations that support children battling cancer. Through that experience, she learned that you never know what anyone is going through, and just because you’ve faced many challenges, you can still do things you’ve never imagined were possible.
irving@jitfosteryouth.org | 619-657-6924
Irving graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s in Biochemistry and a minor in personality and social psychology. This was a huge accomplishment for him because while growing up in the foster care system, he did not have a traditional educational experience; from the tender age of one, he constantly moved around, and the instability caused him to not attend school until he was 15 years old.
Because of this gap in education, Irving became a constant learner and is adaptive to people’s needs and personal growth. Irving is passionate about Latinx empowerment and has mentored at SDSU in several different formats as a SOAR mentor as well as an Aztecs Reaching Aztecs (counseling and psychological services) peer mentor.
Irving was a JIT participant for three years and is now our Chief Impact Officer. He is committed to making sure that our community reflects the needs of our participants and that the youth voice is being heard. He also oversees the wonderful Youth Services team, making sure they have the support and resources needed to ensure every participant gets the personalized attention they deserve.
Irving is passionate about movies, TV shows, and podcasts – so if you ever get bored and need recommendations, be sure to reach out to him and he will try to identify some content you may be interested in. In his free time, Irving also loves to longboard on smooth pavement.
ivan@jitfosteryouth.org | 619-657-6938
Ivan began his journey at JIT as a Volunteer Services Coordinator, initially recruiting for and building brand new JIT Services. Since then, Ivan has held a variety of roles and has played a key part in building, recruiting and engaging volunteers across a wide range of services including My First Home, Financial Fitness 101–103, Bridges to Success, Coach Approach to Mentoring, Guide 2 Greatness, College Bound, Basic Needs, Healthy Practices, and My Life My Story for male identifying participants.
Outside of work, Ivan loves golfing, watching soccer, reading, and spending time with his cat Meela.

Before moving to San Diego, Brittany graduated from The College of Charleston in South Carolina, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. She continued her education at the University of San Diego, earning a paralegal certificate. Brittany later joined the Board of Directors for the San Diego Paralegal Association, and discovered through this role how much she enjoys linking students to resources. She facilitated job readiness workshops, played a key role in the planning and execution of Bridging the Gap (SDPA’s annual educational conference), and co-led the development of SDPA’s Mentorship Program.
These experiences led her to volunteer with Voices for Children as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). For three years, Brittany was able to learn about and advocate for foster children and it was during this time that she developed a passion for working to strengthen the foster care community. Brittany began working with Incredible Families as an Engagement Specialist, and as luck would have it, she would pass the Just in Time office each day on her way to the trolley. She became curious about JIT and in researching the organization, she was impressed with the mission, core values, and culture of community. As soon as a position opened, Brittany applied.
Brittany is now a Youth Services Manager for Just in Time. She feels most comfortable assisting participants with employment, and knows she can help empower former foster youth with their career journey. One of her goals is to make the transition out of foster care and into adulthood easier for participants by equipping them with knowledge, confidence, connections, and skills best suited to their individual professional goals.
Outside of work, Brittany enjoys spending time with her cats, Bentley and Pumpkin. Being born and raised in Buffalo, New York, she also loves to indulge in what she calls Buffalonian specialties: the Buffalo Bills Football team, Duff’s chicken wings, beef on weck, and sponge candy. She also enjoys volunteering her time, engaging in self care, and running marathons.

Rebecca grew up in the Bay Area before moving to San Diego to attend
University of California San Diego.
Throughout Rebecca’s childhood she struggled with a loss of identity and
lack of community. When she moved to San Diego she was taken even
further outside her comfort zone. She was able to find purpose and
community as an Outreach Coordinator with the Newman Catholic Center
at UCSD where focused on bringing communities together through dinners
and social events. She also began volunteering at a Youth Emergency
Shelter. This experience provided insight into the difficulties of vulnerable
youth populations.
These experiences sparked a passion in Rebecca for providing community
focused care founded in connection and hope. The focus of her higher
education journey was influenced as well, motivating her to pursue a degree
in Human Developmental Sciences. Rebecca graduated with her Bachelor’s
degree in 2024.
As Just in Time’s Financial Fitness Youth Services Coordinator, Rebecca now
utilizes her experience and trauma informed education to create a positive
impact on young people within the Just in Time community. She hopes to
bring kindness, peace, critical resources and support to those pursuing
financial literacy and independence. In turn, she knows that she has so
much to learn from the youth she interacts with.
Outside of work, Rebecca decompresses by relaxing at the beach, watching
movies and baking desserts. She can often be found hanging out with her
sisters or friends and blasting music all throughout her house and car every
day.

James is a San Diego native who lived with his parents until the age of 12, when he entered the foster care system. He spent most of his six years in the system residing in group home facilities where he had to adapt to communal living situations and institutionalized relationships. Although he has experienced his own challenges within the foster care system, James appreciates the opportunities it has exposed him to. Before foster care, he lived in an unstructured home where he had to grow up too fast and often fend for himself. During his time in care, James had the opportunity to thrive with structure and learned that his level of independence was a skill set, not a survival method.
Today, James lives with a growth mindset and is beating the odds every day. As a graduate of CSU San Marcos with a bachelor’s degree in Literature and Writing, James has gained many connections and employment opportunities that have taught him that hard work and dedication pay off. Not only is James dedicated to continuous growth, he strives to build and strengthen his relationships with others. James understands how important these accomplishments are for himself and his peers who have spent time in foster care; he believes that a person’s background does not determine their future aspirations and endeavors, and people in this community are capable of creating their own destinies.
James has been connected to Just in Time for over 10 years, both as a participant and as a committed staff member. As a past participant, he valued the compassion and accountability the staff and volunteers instilled in him; he continues to embody these qualities in his everyday life. As a staff member, James has learned that this work takes perseverance and tenacity in order to make a difference in the lives of the young adults we serve. James’ goal is to be intentional with every project he is involved with. He is extremely proud to be a part of the Just in Time community and is committed to the enormous efforts of supporting young adults striving to achieve self-sufficiency, well-being, and life satisfaction.
When James is not at work, he enjoys spending time with loved ones (especially if food is included), riding his motorcycle, and cooking; his favorite dish to make is biscuits and gravy.
Dr. Shelley Kind completed her PhD in Boston, training at sites such as The National Center for PTSD, Massachusetts General Hospital’s Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress, McLean Hospital’s OCD Institute, and Ryan Center for Sports Medicine, focusing on helping patients with insomnia and chronic pain. She completed internship and postdoctoral residency, at UCSD/San Diego VA, with continued emphasis on trauma and additional specialization in relationship therapy.
Currently, Dr. Kind serves as a staff psychologist at VA San Diego, where she sees couples and individuals and a clinical assistant professor at UCSD, training practicum students and postdoctoral residents and lecturing to doctoral students and licensed mental health professionals. She has completed certifications in trauma and couples therapies, and recently completed University of Michigan’s Sex Therapy Certificate Program. She is passionate about providing culturally responsive, evidence-based care to the people she works with, and loves to train other mental health professionals in these approaches as well.
After becoming a volunteer with JIT’s Rise to Resilience program, Dr. Kind taught trauma focused treatment to JIT’s doctoral student therapists, and provided weekly consultation for their cases. Dr. Kind is thrilled to continue this work in a supervisor role for JIT’s practicum students. Outside of work, she loves to cook and host dinners for friends, read, do active hobbies (rock climb, hike, pickleball, pilates), write, and travel.

She is passionate about helping her foster youth community and worked at Promises2Kids as a youth advocate while pursuing her AA. She also worked for a retirement home before joining the JIT team.

Alyssa graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies, with emphases in Social Work, Biology and Child & Family Development. At her university, she was involved in both the Guardian Scholars program and Delta Beta Tau fraternity. Early in life, Alyssa moved throughout several states in southeastern United States, becoming a ward of the state at the age of three. She feels fortunate to have graduated high school in San Diego, even as an Unaccompanied Homeless Youth, because she was able to connect with services like Just in Time.
Alyssa’s early experiences and southern upbringing have instilled in her a lifelong pursuit of serving her community and, especially, youth who have gone through similar situations. She connected with Just in Time originally as a participant and quickly took interest in applying her education and skills within the organization. Her favorite youth services as a participant, were Rise to Resilience, Career Horizons for Young Women, and Pathways to Financial Power.
Experiencing so much instability with housing throughout her life, Alyssa was most grateful for her first program with Just in Time, My First Home. Miguel earned his A.A. in Anthropology from El Camino College before
transferring to San Diego State University, where he completed his B.A. in
2023. While pursuing his degree, he worked full-time as a line cook,
developing a passion for culinary creativity that continues today.
After graduation, he discovered his talent for youth development as a

roommate introduced him to the organization. After experiencing the

Hello! I am Keri, an associate marriage and family therapist working under the supervision of Dr. Jill Ault. I hold a masters of counseling from Texas A&M and a masters of marriage and family therapy from Alliant University. I have over a decade of experience working for San Diego Unified as a district counselor. In this role, I supported parents and children in navigating personal and academic challenges.
I believe in a solutions-focused approach to therapy that calls upon the client’s skills to effect positive changes in the client’s life. Everyone has unique abilities and those abilities should be employed to assist the client in making the changes they desire. Every person is capable and should be seen as the authority of their life.
I perceive those seeking therapy as desiring to gain support in managing hardship in their life. One’s life journey is not set in stone. It is my aim to assist my clients in becoming the creators of their story in a way that is pleasing to them.
Gayle is a certified public accountant with a degree in accounting and an MBA from Arizona State University in Tempe. She spent the first five years of her career as an auditor with Deloitte, where she audited not-for-profit organizations, regional governmental groups, and publicly held companies. After receiving her MBA and raising her family, Gayle joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in Los Angeles and spent the next 11 years providing accounting and consulting services to multinational corporations, not-for-profit organizations, and various governmental entities within the federal government of the United States and the countries of Moldova, Ukraine, and Russia.
As an experienced auditor and consultant, Gayle has helped organizations achieve best-in-class finance and accounting functions through the implementation of enabling technology, re-engineered processes, redesigned procedures and training. After leaving PricewaterhouseCoopers and settling in San Diego, Gayle spent the next few years as Controller for the Information Technology division of Sony Electronics. She thought about retiring but after reading an article about Phillip Rivers, his Rivers of Hope Foundation, and its assistance to youth at Just in Time for Foster Youth, she volunteered on the Audit Committee of JIT. She was soon asked to be part-time Chief Financial Officer, which she gladly accepted in 2012.
Fully committed to the JIT mission, Gayle uses her skills and experience to help keep the finance and accounting functions running smoothly so everyone else can do what they do best in order to serve JIT’s youth. As CFO, Gayle manages the accounting functions, processes, procedures, and internal controls at JIT and provide inputs and guidance related to finances. Her accomplishments have been achieved through team efforts – successful audits year after year, a healthy cash reserve, timely financial reporting, cross training within the accounting department, and a team of talented accounting professionals. By lending her talents and experience, Gayle is helping to build a financial infrastructure that is scalable and can be replicated anywhere. Her vision for the future is to see the JIT model proliferate from coast to coast, as every city in America has foster youth who need a welcoming community of support once they leave foster care.
Outside of Just in Time, Gayle enjoys traveling and renovating and flipping properties.

Jessica Diller is the Community Events Manager at Just in Time for Foster Youth. She holds the ultimate privilege of leading the organization’s efforts to engage the JIT community through large events and workshops. As the Community Events Manager, Jessica ensures the seamless coordination and execution of all JIT events. They develop and manage event project plans, oversee the JIT Events Calendar, and ensure event logistics run smoothly, partnering with external vendors and internal JIT teams.
Jessica first learned about Just in Time while working as an AmeriCorps VIP Fellow at North County Lifeline immediately after her undergraduate graduation. She admired the organization’s work even then, but it wasn’t until she joined Just in Time in 2021 that she realized her personal connection to the foster care system: her grandfather served as a licensed foster parent to her cousins for several years. Over the past decade, Jessica witnessed the events and living situations that led to her cousins’ placement, the complex family dynamics involved, and the challenges they faced in transitioning to self-sufficient adulthood. Tragically, one of her cousins, Mckayla, passed away at the age of 20 without the knowledge of Just in Time. Jessica often reflects on how Mckayla’s life might have been different if she had been a part of this incredible community and had access to their extensive resources and connections. Therefore, Jessica is dedicated to ensuring the inclusion and support of every potential youth participant, as she firmly believes that everyone deserves a caring community, regardless of their family background.
Jessica’s educational background includes an undergraduate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Olin College and a Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from the University of San Diego. For leisure, she enjoys exploring new experiences with her loved ones, whether it be in foreign countries, trying new restaurants, or visiting familiar places with a fresh perspective. In the distant future, Jessica hopes to visit every United States National Park.
Kelly Leahy graduated from the University of Arizona with a BA degree. She has over 10 years of experience working in Human Resources, most recently, she was the HR Director for another local non-profit organization.
One of her biggest passions in the HR field is workplace culture and talent. After getting to meet some of the JIT team as well as attending JIT events, she quickly grew to realize the tight sense of community and support that JIT offers local foster youth, and most importantly, the lasting impact and opportunity that JIT provides to the foster youth community as they move forward into adulthood.
Outside of work, Kelly loves to spend time with her family. She has three small children whom she loves to chase around the San Diego Zoo or watch them play sports.

In 2010, Sophia volunteered as a mock interviewer for San Diego Second Chance Program, an agency that serves youth and adults who were involved in the justice system. After that experience, Sophia realized she wanted to continue working with people who sought to move on from their past and better their lives. So she joined the organization and worked as a Job Developer and Business Services Coordinator. Sophia continued her career with other workforce development organizations. These positions allowed her to create a bridge to connect at-risk youth, veterans, and justice involved persons with meaningful relationships and job opportunities.
In 2018, Sophia connected with Just in Time at the annual Pathways to Financial Power conference, where she participated in the career fair speaking to youth about work-readiness and mentorship opportunities. She was impressed by her experience and is now happy to be serving as JIT’s Volunteer Services Lead Outreach Coordinator.
One of Sophia’s goals is to continue to build strong, meaningful, and long-lasting relationships within the JIT community. She hopes to be able to introduce JIT’s services to youth in the foster care system prior to them aging out at age 18 so that they understand there is an established community and support system to help them transition.
In her free time, Sophia enjoys hiking and salsa dancing. Her favorite place is Zion National Park, which she calls “breathtaking.”

Chris is a native of Dallas, Texas but grew up and lives in East County San Diego. Chris began his 30-year media career as an intern at a San Diego radio station while going to junior college. Eventually he would be charged with overseeing the marketing and promotions departments for five of San Diego’s top-rated radio stations along with managing 30 full- and part-time employees. Chris was always most proud of his ability to use the power and megaphone of those radio stations to give back to the San Diego community that has been so good to him.
Chris first became acquainted with the struggles facing foster youth 15 years ago when he was approached by a former colleague to donate prizes and help promote a fundraiser for San Pasqual Academy. Chris was recently introduced to the Just in Time mission by an old friend and co-worker, and immediately knew this was where he needed to be.
Chris is the Community Outreach Manager at JIT and provides extraordinary stewardship to the investors and staff of Just in Time. Since joining JIT in 2019, Chris remains humbled and inspired every day by the generosity our investors extend in support of the JIT mission.
Chris’ passions are family and travel. When Chris is not at work in the JIT offices, you can usually find him with family or relaxing with friends at his family homes in Palm Springs, California and Rosarito Beach, Mexico.
