Life Changing Choices
A Just in Time Book
By Lived Experience Experts
Why We Wrote This Book
Life Changing Choices:
The 7 Essential Choices at the Heart of Transformational Change for Foster Youth and Your Community was written to begin a conversation about a bold new idea with the potential to break the cycle of foster care in America. Life Changing Choices challenges the prevailing mindset of the existing child welfare/foster care system that broken children come from broken homes and need to be “fixed”. The alternative vision put forth in this book is based on demonstrated and measurable impact over 20 years in the Just in Time for Foster Youth Community. The foundation of the proposed shift is based on seven essential Choices that lead to Empowerment, Connection and Community and that are essential to transformative and durable change.
Voices of Experience
Co-authored by lived experience experts in foster care, readers are given the opportunity to learn from the firsthand accounts of youth raised in The System – a system predicated on disruption and displacement.
More than a “How To” guide, Life Changing Choices: The 7 Essential Choices at the Heart of Transformational Change for Foster Youth and Your Community is a “Why Do” challenge to the traditional approach to child welfare, one that offers a new way of thinking about the critical decisions that must be made to reverse the alarming outcomes of homelessness, hopelessness, and generational cycles of dependence that persist in our cities.

About the Authors
For 20 years, Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) has created a reliable, responsive, and real community for young people as they transition from the foster care system into adulthood. Most of JIT’s staff have lived experience in foster care, and hundreds of our volunteers help connect over 2,000 youth to the critical resources and lasting relationships needed to become Confident, Capable and Connected.
JIT aims to break the cycle of foster care by helping transition age foster youth achieve self-sufficiency and well-being.
