JIT to Host Unveiling of My First Home Distribution Center and Moving Truck

by | Apr 4, 2019 | HOUSING, IN THE NEWS

San Diego CA— Young people setting up the first home of their own after leaving foster care will have more of the help they need when Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) hosts an unveiling of its new moving truck and grand opening of the My First Home Distribution Center on Saturday, April 13, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 4561 Mission Gorge Place, Suite G, San Diego, 92120.

Just in Time is a nonprofit that engages a caring community to help transition age foster youth, ages 18-26, achieve self-sufficiency and well-being. This grand opening will include a fun, family-friendly gathering to celebrate the debut of the new moving truck and distribution center with JIT participants, volunteers and staff.

My First Home is a JIT resource that helps transition age foster youth turn their first apartments into safe, comfortable places to live using gently used furniture and new household items donated by people throughout San Diego County. During My First Home shopping days, youth go on shopping sprees at JIT’s Distribution Center to get all the essentials they need. The space is set up just like a store as volunteers assist and guide youth shoppers, helping them choose the right items to serve their needs and live comfortably.

“Even though the furniture may not be brand new, the way it is displayed and the opportunity for youth to decide exactly what they want make it a new experience for young people who have a history of never feeling they have anything that belongs to them,” explained JIT Executive Director, Don Wells. “And the volunteers not only help them pick out what they need but also move them into their new living space and help make it their own.”

JIT’s larger distribution center offers more options for furniture, appliances, linens and other home goods to transition age youth, offering a more efficient shopping experience for My First Home participants. JIT’s newly-acquired moving truck through their partnership with philanthropic organization, Las Patronas, will also allow greater capacity and flexibility to pick up and deliver My First Home furnishings, as well as serving other JIT needs and events.
