In San Diego, getting from home to school and work is a major challenge if you don’t have a car.
For Joanna, this meant a 45-minute walk from the trolley stop to work – one way!
“I took the bus and trolley everywhere,” she remembered. “Traveling from my house in South Bay to school at SDSU took two hours. I had to carry pounds of groceries in my hand to the trolley and then to the bus stop, and then to my apartment. Groceries were so hard.”
When Joanna found a car for $900, she was determined to get her license. She got as far as her permit test, and then hit a wall. A written test was one thing, but actually getting behind the wheel of a car? Joanna needed someone to teach her how to drive.
“As a former foster youth, I knew there had to be something. I researched my butt off and then I found Just in Time.”
Joanna signed up for Changing Lanes where she was given access to more than 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training for free!
As Joanna cruised city streets, congested parking lots, and freeways, her driving confidence grew. She passed her behind-the-wheel test with flying colors. Now, she drives to work, school, and the Just in Time headquarters where she participates in College Bound workshops!
